Russian aircraft make unsafe approach to NATO ships
Two Russian aircraft conducted a "dangerous" and "unprofessional" overflight of NATO ships in the Baltic Sea
This is reported on the website of the NATO Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM).
"On Nov. 17, two Russian fighter aircraft made an unsafe and unprofessional approach toward Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1), which was conducting routine operations in the Baltic Sea. The Russian pilots failed to respond to Allied forces’ standing query communications and overflew the force at an altitude of 300 feet (91 m) and a distance of 80 yards (73 m)," the press service said.
NATO notes that such actions were carried out in a dangerous area "activated" for air defense training. The height of the maneuver of Russian aviation also created risks.
"Interaction has increased the risk of miscalculations, mistakes and accidents. NATO forces acted responsibly, fulfilling their mission in full compliance with international air and sea regulations. NATO will respond appropriately to any interference with legitimate activities in the area that endangers the safety of aircraft, ships or their crews. NATO does not seek confrontation and does not pose a threat," MARCOM said.
