Ukraine tests glide bomb, needs funds to accelerate development — Defense Express
The Ukrainian design bureau Medoid is developing a domestic version of the Russian UMPC (KAB) kit, which converts a regular aerial bomb into a high-precision glide bomb
According to Defense Express, the new Ukrainian kit is already undergoing tests: the bomb is dropped from a Su-24 during horizontal flight and can strike targets up to 60 km away.
Externally, the device resembles the Russian KAB bomb but features different internal components, including a Ukrainian-made control and navigation module, although some parts are still imported.
“The planning and control module for the 500 kg bomb is our own development. The wings are easy to attach to the bomb—no issues connecting them, just a few minutes. Domestic enterprises are involved in manufacturing. The navigation module is our own; however, we are currently testing a new system developed by one of France’s leading companies on our product to ensure maximum resilience and resistance to electronic warfare. Still, some components we have to import from abroad,” said Oleh Vostrykh, a representative of Medoid design bureau.
The developers aim to increase the strike range to 80–100 km, depending on the drop altitude.
- Ukraine entered the full-scale war in 2022 with virtually no missiles. But missile production is now rapidly ramping up, both domestic designs and joint projects with EU and NATO countries.
