NATO PURL initiative brings $1.5 billion in defense aid to Ukraine
Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Germany fund Ukraine’s defense via NATO’s PURL mechanism for weapons and ammunition procurement
This was announced by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Our new defense-support PURL initiative with partners is already bringing tangible results. As of today, we already have $1.5 billion pledged,” he wrote.
The head of state noted that thanks to NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List initiative, NATO member states can cooperate to purchase U.S.-manufactured weapons for Ukraine.
“This is a mechanism that truly strengthens our defense,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
To date, the Netherlands has contributed $500 million, the joint contribution of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden has reached $500 million, and yesterday Germany added another $500 million. The Ukrainian leader thanked Berlin for this contribution.
“We continue to speak with other nations. Every contribution under PURL is a direct investment in our ability to defend our people’s lives and bring a dignified peace closer. I thank all our allies for standing with Ukraine,” Zelenskyy concluded.
The Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) is a new mechanism for providing aid to Kyiv initiated by NATO. It stipulates that, in accordance with Ukrainian requests, a priority list of weapons and ammunition will be formed and approved by NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, while funding will be provided by Alliance states or partners.
