Three Ukrainian NPPs restore electricity production after November Russian strike — IAEA
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that three Ukrainian nuclear power plants have significantly restored electricity production after a sharp reduction last week, implemented as a precautionary measure due to attacks on the energy system
The IAEA stated this on its website.
Of the nine reactors at the Khmelnytskyy, Rivne, and South Ukraine nuclear power plants, eight are currently operating, while one is shut down. Over the past week, most of them have gradually increased their capacity after Russia's massive strike on November 28 against the electrical infrastructure. However, some external power lines remain disconnected.
“A stable electricity grid that provides secure off-site power is essential to ensure nuclear safety at Ukraine’s operating nuclear power plants, which are vital for producing the electricity the country needs, especially during the cold winter months. The operators have demonstrated significant resilience during and after this latest period of grid instability so that these plants can maintain nuclear safety and generate electricity following last week’s output cuts,“ Director General Grossi said.
He added, "However, the fragile grid situation remains a source of deep concern and we will continue to closely monitor relevant developments, including with follow-up expert visits to the electrical substations on which the nuclear power plants depend." He also called "for maximum restraint, so that no action affecting the external power supply and nuclear safety is taken." The statement did not mention who exactly attacked the Ukrainian energy system or specify to whom this call was directed.
The IAEA statement also noted that “despite the effects of the military conflict, including frequent air raid alarms,” the IAEA teams at the Khmelnytskyy, Rivne and South Ukraine NPPs and the Chornobyl site reported that nuclear safety and security at these facilities was being maintained.
- On the night and morning of November 28, Russia launched 188 air targets at Ukraine's territory. Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed 79 missiles and 35 drones.
- On November 29, the IAEA reported that after the attacks, the power output of nine reactors at Ukrainian nuclear power plants was reduced. One reactor at the Rivne NPP was disconnected from the grid, and the Khmelnytskyy NPP lost connection with two power lines.
- Greenpeace stated that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is failing in its role to urgently protect Ukrainian nuclear power plants from Russian missile attacks.
- Due to Russia's strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, Ukraine is convening an emergency meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors on December 12.
