Russia strikes supermarket in Kostiantynivka, leaving 14 dead, 43 injured

On Friday, August 9, the Russian army attacked a supermarket in Kostiantynivka, Donetsk region. The attack killed 14 people and injured 43

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.

"This is terror and barbarism. No situation at the front can justify the killing of civilians. An investigation into the war crime has already been launched. The terrorist country must be and will be punished for everything it has done," the press service quoted the head of the department, Andriy Kostin, as saying.

Around 4:00 p.m., the head of the Donetsk police, Ruslan Osypenko, reported on the 12 dead in a telethon.

Earlier, Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported that there are 11 killed and 44 wounded as a result of the Russian attack on the city.

"It is preliminarily known that the invaders used a Kh-38 missile to fire. At least four private houses, a shopping center, a post office, shops, a car wash, and cars were damaged," the statement says.

Earlier, the Prosecutor General’s Office reported that at least 11 people were killed and 37 others were injured of varying severity as a result of the Russian shelling of Kostiantynivka.

According to the investigation, on August 9, 2024, at 11:05 a.m., Russian troops allegedly conducted an air strike on Kostiantynivka. They hit a local shopping center with grocery and hardware stores.

Law enforcement officers launched a pre-trial investigation in criminal proceedings over violation of the laws and customs of war (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

At 1:52 p.m., Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that rescuers had extinguished a fire in a 1,000-square-meter shopping center.

Klymenko added that 45 people were injured in the Russian shelling of Kostiantynivka: 10 were killed and 35 others were wounded. Residential buildings, shops, and more than a dozen cars were also damaged.

As of 1:48 p.m, the head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration Vadym Filashkin reported that the number of killed in Kostiantynivka had increased to 9.

Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy informed that 4 people were killed. At least 24 people were injured.

"Kostiantynivka, Donetsk region. Russian terrorists strike at an ordinary supermarket and post office. People are under the rubble. The rescue operation is underway, and everything will be done to save people," the president wrote.

In addition, the Russian strike damaged a Nova Poshta branch, the press service said.

"The employees are alive. One of the employees has a concussion and is being taken to the hospital. We are in touch with our colleagues to provide all the necessary support and assistance," the company wrote.

As of 12:40 p.m., the head of the Donetsk military administration, Vadym Filashkin, reported that two people were killed in Kostiantynivka as a result of a Russian strike. The number of injured has increased to 17. The search and rescue operation is ongoing.

According to Filashkin, Russian troops targeted Kostiantynivka with cannon artillery, hitting a supermarket. The attack resulted in at least 7 people being wounded, with one in serious condition and receiving necessary medical aid.

"This is another targeted attack on a crowded place, another act of terror by the Russians," the statement said.

Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, published a video from the scene of the fire.

"This is a civilian facility where many civilians could have been. The occupiers know this and strike anyway," the ombudsman said.

Earlier, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, reported the attack.

"The strike on the supermarket in Kostiantynivka is another act of terror by the Russians. Attacking civilians appears to be their modus operandi. Russia must face full accountability for its actions," Yermak wrote.

The information about the attack on Suspilne was also confirmed by the head of the Military Regional Administration, Serhiy Horbunov.

  • On the night of August 9, the occupying Russian army launched attacks on four settlements in the Kharkiv region. The assaults resulted in five civilians being injured and several houses being destroyed.
