Orban opposes Ukraine’s EU bid, claims it would "soak up resources like a sponge"
Hungarian PM Victor Orbán says he is confident Hungarians will back the government's stance and vote against Ukraine joining the EU
According to European Pravda, local media quoted the Hungarian prime minister's statement.
As Orbán stated, quoted by Telex, Ukraine wants to maintain an army of one million in the long run, and "we, the Europeans, will be the ones paying for it instead of strengthening our own Western European armed forces."
"Hungary wants to keep Ukraine out of the EU because if we let it in, it will soak up all the resources like a sponge," said the Hungarian Prime Minister.
He also spoke of an “energy threat” from Ukraine, complaining about the EU's intention to stop buying energy from Russia.
According to Orbán, without gas and oil from Russia, Hungary will have to pay an additional 800 billion forints a year for gas from other sources.
According to his estimates, Hungarians will have to pay twice as much for electricity, and heating bills will quadruple.
The funds allocated to reduce utility costs will thus “evaporate,” he said.
- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán says that Ukraine’s accession to the EU would allegedly destroy the Hungarian economy. He claims that during the three years of war in Ukraine, Budapest has spent several billion euros.
