New Pope Leo XIV receives list of Ukrainian POWs
Newly elected Pope Leo XIV has received a list of Ukrainian defenders held in Russian captivity
According to Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the list was delivered during a meeting between the Pope and representatives of Eastern Catholic Churches, with the help of Ukraine’s Embassy to the Holy See and the Sovereign Order of Malta. A representative of the families of captured Ukrainian soldiers personally handed over the names.
The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church delegation, led by Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, was the largest and most active group at the event. Shevchuk congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election, to which the Pope responded by expressing his solidarity with Ukraine.
“My heart is with the suffering and beloved people of Ukraine,” the pontiff said. “Let us do everything possible to achieve a true peace — just and lasting! May all prisoners be freed, and may children return to their families!”
