German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suspects a connection between U.S. President Donald Trump’s phone calls with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine

German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius quoted Merz’s words that "there is a pattern with the Russian president, and phone calls are usually followed by even more severe attacks."
"What happened last night reinforced this impression," he added.
Cornelius also emphasized that the massive Russian attacks on Ukraine after the Trump-Putin calls "spoke for themselves."
The spokesman further hopes that this will contribute to "decision-making regarding the position towards Russia, especially on sanctions." However, Trump has not yet fulfilled his promise to the EU to strengthen sanctions against Moscow.
