Petro Poroshenko, fifth President of Ukraine, says that the killing of Andriy Parubiy was not only an attack on a well-known politician but also a blow to the ideals of the Revolution of Dignity

He made the remarks during a session in the Verkhovna Rada, which was broadcast by MP Oleksii Honcharenko.

“Yesterday, Lviv and all of Ukraine bid farewell to an outstanding Ukrainian, a true hero, Andriy Parubiy. He was a person who knew how to unite parliament. Even in his death, he brought us together again. I can say without exaggeration that he was the best speaker of the Verkhovna Rada,” Poroshenko said.

He emphasized that under Parubiy’s leadership, parliament worked transparently and laws were passed in the session hall, not “in dark offices.”

The politician underlined that Parubiy’s murder was orchestrated by Russian intelligence and their collaborators: “Andriy was killed not just as a politician, but as a hero of the Revolution. This was a shot by the Kremlin, by the Russian forces, the fifth column, and the Anti-Maidan. A shot at our ideals, at the Revolution of Dignity.”

According to Poroshenko, the investigation has already shown that the assassination was coordinated via Telegram networks, which are actively used today to organize terrorist actions against Ukraine.

“We must draw conclusions. It’s time to ban Telegram in Ukraine — once and for all,” he said. Poroshenko called on Ukrainians to unite and act, stressing that the best way to honor Parubiy’s memory is not just by erecting memorials, but by collectively defending Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty.

What is known about Andriy Parubiy’s killing

On August 30, around noon in Lviv, former Verkhovna Rada speaker and MP Andriy Parubiy was shot dead on the street. An unknown attacker, disguised as a delivery courier, approached Parubiy and fired approximately eight shots. Parubiy received fatal injuries and died at the scene. The killer escaped on an electric bicycle, disguised as a Glovo courier.

Less than two days after the killing, law enforcement identified a suspect. The suspect was tracked in Khmelnytskyi Oblast. Around 1 a.m. on September 1, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that the probable killer of Andriy Parubiy was detained in a joint police and SBU operation in Khmelnytskyi Oblast. That same day, September 1, he was officially charged with intentional murder.

The day before, media reports suggested a motive: allegedly, Russian intelligence offered the suspect the body of his missing son in exchange for killing the Ukrainian politician.

On Tuesday, September 2, the Halytskyi District Court of Lviv placed Mykhailo Stelnikov in pretrial detention for 60 days without bail. He faces life imprisonment.
