Germany to boost Ukraine's air defenses with 4 IRIS-T systems, Patriot missiles
On April 11, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced at a meeting in the Ramstein format the delivery of 4 IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine, along with 300 missiles for them and 30 missiles for Patriot systems
Suspilne reported the information.
“Germany initially committed around 4 billion euros in aid to Ukraine through 2025. In addition, the Bundestag recently cleared the way for another 3 billion euros this year and an additional 8 billion euros through 2029. That brings the total to over 11 billion euros in additional support,” said Pistorius.
He emphasized that the funds will primarily be directed toward strengthening Ukraine’s air defense.
“We’re talking about 4 more IRIS-T systems, plus 300 missiles. We’re talking about 120 MANPADS — that is, mobile air defense systems — reconnaissance drones, initially 300 of them, 25 more Marder infantry fighting vehicles, 15 Leopard main battle tanks, 14 artillery systems, 100 coastal surveillance radars, and an initial delivery of 100,000 artillery shells,” the German Defense Minister stated, adding that Germany has already delivered additional missiles for Patriot systems to Ukraine.
The German minister also noted: “And in addition — and this is very recent — I can announce here today that over the past few days, we’ve been able to provide 30 more guided missiles for the Patriot systems from our own reserves, which have already been delivered to Ukraine.”
- The meetings in the Coalition of the Willing format on April 10 and the Ramstein format on April 11 in Brussels mark a transitional moment: without U.S. participation, Europe is independently seeking new ways to defend Ukraine.
