EU awaits Turkey talks before pushing new Russia sanctions
European leaders are prepared to await potential Ukraine-Russia talks in Turkey on May 15 before pushing the U.S. to announce new sanctions against Moscow
Bloomberg reported the information with reference to its own sources.
On May 12, a conversation took place between American and European officials. After that, according to sources, it became clear that the American side wants to give negotiations between Russia and Ukraine a chance to take place before increasing pressure on the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
In turn, if Putin refuses to meet with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy or if Russia does not agree to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, European leaders will urge U.S. President Donald Trump to follow through on his threat to impose sanctions on Moscow.
However, during the May 12 conversation, the American side did not clearly express its readiness to impose sanctions against Russia.
- The European Union may impose sanctions against the consortium that operates the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.
