EU threatens Nord Stream 2 sanctions if Russia refuses ceasefire
The European Union may impose sanctions against the consortium that operates the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine
European Commission spokesperson Paola Pinho stated this at a briefing in Brussels, reports European Pravda.
According to her, if Russia rejects the ceasefire, one of the possible additional sanctions could be sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 consortium.
"I can refer to one option that President von der Leyen herself mentioned on Saturday during a videoconference with the 'coalition of the willing,' to which she joined online. She raised the issue of the possibility of imposing sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 consortium. So, this is one of the options," said Pinho.
She emphasized that imposing sanctions on everyone involved in the Nord Stream 2 consortium would signal that "it may not even be worth considering investing in Nord Stream 2."
- During his night address on May 11, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin claimed to be willing to hold direct negotiations with the Ukrainian side in Turkey next week. However, he ignored the idea of a 30-day ceasefire. In response, U.S. leader Donald Trump stated that he would continue working with both sides, and that the coming week would be "great."
- On May 12, the German government stated that if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine by the end of the day, European partners will begin preparations for new sanctions. Meanwhile, the Kremlin said that "the language of ultimatums is unacceptable for Russia."
