Belgium expected to transfer F-16s to Ukraine soon – military expert Zgurets
Defense Express analyst Serhiy Zgurets revealed that Ukraine is set to receive a total of 85 F-16 aircraft
He stated it on Espreso TV.
"Belgium has officially revealed plans to transfer 30 F-16 aircraft to Ukraine. When combined with commitments from the Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway, Ukraine could potentially receive a total of 85 F-16s. Securing 30 aircraft from Belgium represents a significant portion of this potential arsenal. Initial deliveries are expected this year, with the possibility of Belgian planes arriving in Ukraine as soon as next month, considering factors such as pilot training and logistical arrangements," stated Zgurets.
The announcement of Belgium's intention to send 30 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine has both positive and negative implications. "There are discussions in Belgium about restricting the use of these aircraft against targets in Russian airspace. This includes limitations on deploying Western equipment against facilities within Russia, which is frustrating for us," explained the analyst.
He further noted that if Ukraine receives long-range missiles or other compatible models to complement the F-16 platforms, political constraints will significantly limit the potential of the transferred weapons.
- Belgium's Minister of Foreign Affairs announced on May 28th that her country intends to transfer 30 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine by 2028. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo emphasized that Ukraine would be permitted to operate these aircraft exclusively within its own territory.
