Beijing backs direct talks between Ukraine and Russia, says Chinese Foreign Ministry
China supports direct talks between Ukraine and Russia to end the war and hopes that the outcome will be an agreement acceptable to all parties
This was stated on May 20 by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning, according to Global Times.
The diplomat commented on the May 19 phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. After the call, Trump said that Russia and Ukraine would soon begin negotiations for a ceasefire, while Putin announced ongoing work on a memorandum for a possible peace agreement, but without agreeing to an unconditional ceasefire.
Mao Ning emphasized that China supports all efforts aimed at achieving peace, including direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. She highlighted the importance of a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable peace agreement reached through dialogue.
“We support direct dialogue and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and a political solution to the crisis. We hope all parties can reach a fair, lasting, and binding peace agreement that is acceptable to all sides through dialogue and negotiation,” the diplomat said.
In response to a question about China’s possible involvement in such talks, considering proposals for different venues including the Vatican, Mao Ning said: “We are willing to work with the international community, in accordance with the wishes of the parties concerned, to continue playing a constructive role in resolving the crisis and achieving lasting peace.”
- Polish foreign minister believes China could force Russia to stop the war by threatening trade embargoes, though he calls it unlikely for now.
