Russia kills at least 183 civilians, injures 836 in Ukraine in May — UN
In May, at least 183 civilians were killed and another 836 wounded in Ukraine as a result of Russian attacks. The main threat came from long-range missiles and 'kamikaze' drones
This is according to a report by the UN.
In frontline areas, most casualties were caused by short-range drones equipped with high-precision navigation systems. Ninety-seven percent of all casualties occurred in Ukrainian-controlled territories.
The number of civilian deaths in May remained high following a sharp increase in April. According to UN mission head Danielle Bell, 2025 has become significantly more destructive for civilians than 2024. Intense airstrikes and frequent drone attacks along the frontline continue to pose a serious threat to civilians.
Since the beginning of June, long-range weapon attacks have intensified further. According to Ukrainian authorities, since June 6, Russian forces have launched over 1,500 such munitions. As a result of direct hits or falling debris from intercepted weapons, at least 19 civilians have been killed and another 205 injured. The hardest-hit cities include Kharkiv, Kyiv, Odesa, and other areas far from the frontline.
“Hours-long night attacks involving hundreds of munitions are sowing fear among families forced to spend the night in bomb shelters, constantly listening for the sounds of drones in the sky. At this pace and scale of escalation, further civilian casualties are inevitable,” said Bell.
- On the night of June 12, Russia launched drones across Ukrainian territory. As a result of an attack on Kharkiv, more than a dozen people were injured.
