Ukraine spends 60% of budget on military — PM
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that the army is funded entirely from domestic sources, with 60% of the state budget allocated to it
He made this statement in parliament during a government Q&A session, as reported by Espreso correspondent Kateryna Halko.
According to PM Shmyhal, the government is simultaneously working to attract external and internal resources.
"In particular, in 2024, Ukraine received $24.5 billion in external financing," the Prime Minister said. The main beneficiaries were the European Union, the United States, the IMF, Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom.
The head of the Ukrainian government said that Ukraine's external financing needs for this year are about $38 billion.
PM Shmyhal reminded that Ukraine managed to restructure its external debt and thus save $11.4 billion over three years.
"We finance the army exclusively from our domestic sources. Defence expenditures account for up to 60% of the total expenditures of the general fund of the state budget. Now we need to find funds within the country to cover the deficit and ensure that our defence forces have everything they need," the Prime Minister stressed.
- Last year, Ukraine's arms production tripled, and in the first eight months of 2024 it doubled, Shmyhal said. In particular, drones, artillery, armoured vehicles and shells are produced.
