Rosatom to limit IAEA's inspections of Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant
Rosatom says that it will limit the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) ability to inspect Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP) after the shelling of the energy facility on Sunday, November 20
Reuters reports this.
The IAEA said that as a result of shelling at the Zaporizhzhia NPP on November 20, a radioactive waste storage facility, a cooling pond, a cable to one of the reactors, a bridge to another reactor, and auxiliary buildings were damaged at the plant. The agency plans to conduct an inspection to assess the extent of the damage.
In turn, the adviser to the general director of Rosatom, Renat Karchaa, stated that the IAEA will have restrictions on the objects that can be inspected.
“If they want to check a facility that is not related to nuclear security, they will not be granted access,” Karchaa said in a comment to the Russian propaganda media.
The head of the IAEA, Raphael Grossi, noted that the shelling of the plant caused a risk to the lives of many people, but “this time it was lucky that there were no serious consequences.”
“We were fortunate a potentially serious nuclear incident did not happen. Next time, we may not be so lucky,” Grossi said.
