Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán accused President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of issuing “open threats” against Hungary, warning they would “not remain without consequences.” Orbán claimed that Zelenskyy admitted Ukraine had targeted the Druzhba oil pipeline because Budapest opposed Ukraine’s EU membership bid, which he argued proved Hungary’s position was the right one.

He stressed that “blackmail, bombings, and threats will not get anyone into the EU” and said the Ukrainian leader’s remarks “will have long-term consequences.”

Earlier, European Pravda suggested that Orbán’s reaction may have been influenced by recent Ukrainian drone strikes carried out by units under Robert Brovdi, a serviceman in the Ukrainian forces with Hungarian roots, which twice hit the Druzhba pipeline pumping station within days. Until now, Kyiv had refrained from targeting the pipeline to preserve relations with Hungary.

On August 24, when asked if the Druzhba pipeline strikes and the letter to Trump gave him more leverage over Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is blocking Ukraine’s EU accession talks, Zelenskyy replied: “We have always supported friendship between Ukraine and Hungary. And now the existence of Druzhba depends on Hungary's position.”
