The 2020 Olympic silver medalist in the men's 75 kg category began his performances at the Paris Games in the men's 80 kg category with 5-0 victories over Hungary's Pylyp Akimov and Brazil's Wanderlei Pereira. In the semifinals, the Ukrainian defeated Arelen Lopez of Cuba, the Tokyo Olympic champion in this weight, 3:2.

Khyzhniak started the final against the current world champion Oralbay actively and acted as the first seed. The judges gave the opening round to the Ukrainian - 3:2. In the second three minutes, Khyzhniak continued to press, and the Kazakh successfully acted on counterattacks and won the round 3:2. The score on the cards was equalized.

In the decisive round, the boxers were again equal, but Khyzhniak spent the final minute more intensely. The judges eventually gave the Ukrainian a 5-0 advantage in the round. Overall, Oleksandr Khyzhniak won by split decision - 30:27, 30:27, 29:28, 28:29, 28:29 - and became the Olympic champion.

Ukraine's performance at the 2024 Olympics

The Ukrainian national team won 7 medals at the Olympic Games in Paris - 2 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze.

On August 3, Olha Harlan, Alina Komashchuk, Olena Kravatska, and Yulia Bakastova won Ukraine's first gold medal in team saber fencing. On August 4, track and field athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh became the Olympic champion in the high jump.

On August 1, Serhiy Kulish won the first silver medal for the Ukrainian team in the 50-meter smallbore rifle from three positions. On August 5, Ilia Kovtun became the second in the uneven bars in artistic gymnastics.

Olha Harlan also won bronze in the individual saber fencing competition. Two more bronze medals went to track and field athletes. Iryna Herashchenko took third in the high jump and Mykhaylo Kokhan in the hammer throw.

In addition, boxer Oleksandr Khyzhniak guaranteed himself at least a silver medal in the 80 kg category, where he will fight in the final on August 7.
