
New Pentagon deputy once ordered halt to Ukraine aid in 2019
The U.S. Senate on Tuesday confirmed Michael Duffey as Deputy Defense Secretary for Acquisition. In Trump’s first term, he requested a halt to Ukraine aid
According to Reuters, Duffey’s appointment as Deputy Pentagon Chief overseeing weapons programs was approved by 51 senators, with 45 voting against.
Michael Duffy worked at the White House Office of Management and Budget during Trump's first term in office.
At that time, he became known through a Pentagon email in which the White House ordered the Pentagon to suspend security assistance to Ukraine, which had been approved by Congress.
This came to light during the investigation into Trump’s request for Zelenskyy to probe Joe Biden’s actions in Ukraine, which led to Trump’s first impeachment.
Since the start of his second presidential term, Trump has not approved any additional military aid packages for Ukraine.
Due to uncertainty over continued U.S. military support for Ukraine, EU leaders are considering purchasing American weapons themselves to transfer them to Kyiv.
