Ukraine will not face total cut in military support, says former intelligence chief
The European Union has allocated over 150 billion EUR for defense and used part of this money to support Ukraine’s military
Mykola Malomuzh, Ukrainian general and former Head of the Foreign Intelligence Service (2005–2010), shared his opinions Espreso TV.
“Today, Ukraine receives $63 billion in military aid from the United States, provided by the Joe Biden administration. Most Republicans supported this package. Meanwhile, the European Union has created programs, contracts, and funding to buy weapons and ammunition for Ukraine. Right now, the EU is allocating up to 150 billion euros to strengthen its military capabilities,” Malomuzh explained.
The general noted that the European Union is actively increasing spending on the military and defense. Part of these funds will help boost Ukraine's defense industry.
"Most of the weapons and ammunition from the EU’s increased defense budget will go to the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Work is also underway to strengthen the military-industrial complexes of both the EU and Ukraine. So, military assistance to Ukraine won’t stop completely, but it may face delays and smaller amounts. Another important point is that the EU will buy weapons for Ukraine not only from the U.S. but also from other countries," he added.
- On March 4, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the development of a new EU plan aimed at increasing defense capabilities and military potential.
- On April 12, EU finance ministers began negotiations on the creation of a common defense fund that would purchase and store military equipment and then charge member states for its use. In this way, it is planned to increase defense spending without increasing the national debt.
- On May 21, the EU countries agreed to establish a 150 billion EUR Security Action for Europe (SAFE) defense fund.
