New Austria-Hungary vs. Ukraine?
If there were no EU and NATO, I have no doubt that Hungarians would be in an alliance with Russia
“Austria and Hungary have already agreed not to supply weapons to Ukraine… ”
What a whim of history... For more than a hundred years, the two state-forming remnants of the former Danube Empire, which was the first and most persistent enemy of Czarist Russia in the early 20th century, Austria, through the Anschluss, Nazism, and post-Hitler history, and Hungary, through its alliance with Hitler and the entire communist and post-communist period - have come to the point where they are almost alone on the continent in refusing to help a country that could break the back of their historical enemy.
“Among the remnants of the Danube Empire, we have only the Poles, Czechs, and Slovaks. If the EU and NATO had not existed, I have no doubt that the Hungarians would have been allied with Russia.”
And here's an example of how this historical enemy has ceased to be so in less than 100 years.
History can be surprising. And if we add to these two Croatia with its Ukrainophobe president and, to put it mildly, passive and synthetic-philosophical Slovenia, then among the remnants of the Danube Empire, we have only the Poles, Czechs, and Slovaks (the latter with a stretch). And if the EU and NATO had not existed, I have no doubt that the Hungarians would have been allied with Russia.”
“Vienna remembers, and the Alps, and the Danube also remember" (a quote from a Soviet song that tells how Europe danced to Russian music in the spring of 1945 - ed.).
