Modern adaptation of Gogol's "Dead Souls"
In this contemporary rendition, a Russian named Chichikov embarks on a journey through Russian military circles, purchasing the "dead souls" of soldiers and officers who lost their lives in the Russian-Ukrainian war from military commissars
His ultimate goal is to establish a virtual private military company named Ptitsa-Troika.
Each of the seven Russian military commissars represents one of the seven deadly sins. Through conversations and intricate corrupt schemes with these commissars, our new Chichikov unveils the true story of modern Russia, delving into each sin (pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, anger, laziness) with the aid of real-life anecdotes encompassing inter-ethnic and inter-religious conflicts, mobile crematoria, women’s lament, funerals, cemeteries, and other little things that come with war.
“Our Chichikov is, in fact, an agent named Mykola Gogol, who was exiled by the GUR and General Budanov himself. His purpose was merely to gather information about these morons, only to discover that the information he acquired was ultimately deemed useless”
Towards the conclusion of the film, it is revealed that our Chichikov is, in fact, an agent named Mykola Gogol, who was exiled by the GUR (Main Intelligence Directorate) and General Budanov himself. His purpose was merely to gather information about these morons, only to discover that the information he acquired was ultimately deemed useless. Just like any ultimate and profound knowledge.
When discussing Russia, the focus lies not in the outcome but in the process. Consequently, there will be no sequel to the film.
According to the plot, Agent Gogol returns to Ukraine, specifically Nizhyn, where he establishes an agricultural company and spends the rest of his days cultivating cucumbers. He will live long enough to witness the lives of his great-grandchildren. Unlike the original Gogol.
