NATO generals will analyze Ukraine's Kursk region incursion, says Defense Express
Defence Express military expert Ivan Kyrychevskyi commented on the success of Ukrainian troops in breaking through Russia's fortified positions in the Kursk region in less than a day
He spoke about this on Espreso TV.
"From what we can assess, relying on footage from the Russian side, one key component that the Ukrainian Defense Forces developed was the use of small assault groups supported by armored vehicles to break through fortified lines. In less than a day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to overcome the supply line and reach the first and second lines of Russia's defense. This success follows a counteroffensive that had been anticipated for about two months. Even though the fortifications were less dense than in the south, where the supply line was 30 km compared to just 10 km in the Kursk region, this is still a significant success," said Kyrychevskyi.
"Our troops have achieved a sudden operational success that NATO generals will need to study anew," the military expert noted.
"Especially after the summer of 2023, there was a prevailing belief that attacking in modern conditions was nearly impossible, appealing to the fact that previously, the whole world had helped Ukraine, but it did not work. Now, the gestalt has been closed, and they will once again study how Ukraine managed to attack effectively," he added.
The military leadership's silence is justified, according to Kyrychevskyi: "In any operation of this kind, it's crucial to put the enemy in a state of cognitive dissonance, so they don't know how to respond to the situation."
Cross-border raid in Russia’s Kursk region
On August 6, the authorities of the Kursk region of the Russian Federation stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces allegedly tried to break through the Russian border, but were allegedly pushed back. Later, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that "the Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group retreated to its territory.”
The Main Intelligence Directorate refused to comment on the statements regarding the Kursk region. However, NV media, citing its own source in Ukrainian intelligence, wrote that the events in the Kursk region "definitely did not involve fighters of the Russian Volunteer Corps, who are fighting as part of Ukraine's Armed Forces.”
The Institute for the Study of War noted that the Russian Defense Ministry, acting governor of the Kursk region Alexei Smirnov, and some propagandists have different versions of the events in the Kursk region.
On August 7, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin convened the Russian military leadership to discuss the situation in the Kursk region, which he called a "large-scale provocation." At the time, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called on the international community to "strongly condemn the Kyiv regime's criminal attacks on Russian territory."
