If Black Sea Corridor fails, Danube can export 3 million tons of grain monthly - expert
In case the "grain initiative" fails, the Danube offers an alternative route for exporting approximately 3 million tons of grain per month. However, this alternative is costlier
Denys Marchuk, Deputy Chairman of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council, shared the information on Espreso TV.
"If the grain initiative fails, there are alternative ways in the future. In particular, the Danube ports, which have proven themselves quite well. Their capacity is over 2 million tons, and there is a potential to increase it by 1 million tons. In total, about 3 million tons can be exported monthly from the Danube ports to Romania and then to third countries," he emphasized.
Denys Marchuk suggests that in order to facilitate this, it is necessary to deepen the mouth of the Danube and explore the feasibility of transshipping grain from one ship to another near the port of Constanța, Romania.
"It is a fact that it is more expensive. The transshipment will be about USD 40 to USD 45 per ton more expensive than the one that takes place along the sea corridors. Considering that Ukrainian producers have been operating at a loss for more than a year, this logistics is problematic. We are betting on the continuation of the grain initiative, but those who live closer to Bessarabia will also use this route. The western region will promote products by road and rail," the expert added.
