ICC prosecutor who issued Putin's arrest warrant visits Kyiv, meets with Zelenskyy
On September 15, International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan arrived in Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy reported the information on Telegram.
According to him, the subject of the conversation was the continuation of cooperation in bringing Russians to justice for war crimes in Ukraine.
"Meeting with Karim Khan, prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. The cooperation of our state, all our law enforcement institutions, the Office of the Prosecutor General with the International Criminal Court is absolutely systematic and brings real responsibility for Russian war crimes closer," the president wrote.
"We already have the first clear result - a historic arrest warrant for Putin. All other fair results will follow," he added.
What is known about the work of the ICC
On March 17, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Russian leader Vladimir Putin. He is suspected of forcibly deporting Ukrainian children. The ICC clarified that the warrant will be valid for the rest of Putin's life.
On March 23, a memorandum was signed between the government of Ukraine and the court in The Hague on the opening of an office of the International Criminal Court in Kyiv.
The International Court of Justice in The Hague is considering Ukraine's lawsuit against Russia for violating the Convention on the Crime of Genocide. Another 32 countries were allowed to join the lawsuit.
At the end of July, the New York Times reported, citing informed sources, that U.S. President Joe Biden had secretly ordered the exchange of evidence of Russian war crimes in Ukraine with the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
On August 9, US Permanent Representative to the OSCE Michael Carpenter confirmed US media reports that President Joseph Biden had ordered the transfer of evidence of Russian war crimes to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.
On September 14, a field office of the International Criminal Court was opened in Kyiv.
