Acting head of Ukraine’s State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate, the main executive body for nuclear and radiation safety, Oleh Korikov announced this at a media briefing.
He said that Ukraine proposed to the IAEA to arrange permanent monitoring missions at operating Ukrainian nuclear power plants and at Chornobyl NPP, which is at the stage of decommissioning.
"The main purpose of these missions is to monitor the state of nuclear and radiation safety at nuclear facilities in wartime. Being constantly at Ukrainian NPPs, IAEA representatives will be able to witness what is happening in real time. For example, how the targeted missile attacks of Russian troops on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine affect the safety of nuclear facilities. On 23 November, as a result of a missile attack, all power units of Ukrainian NPPs were shut down - emergency protection was triggered", Oleh Korikov noted.
He added that the IAEA agreed with the proposal of the Ukrainian side, so in the near future permanent monitoring missions of the nuclear watchdog will be deployed at all Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
