This was stated by Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin, according to Yle.
She noted that Finland is currently awaiting the deployment of new F-35 fighters. Therefore, when the old Hornet fighters are taken out of service in the country, it will be possible to discuss their further use, but not to the detriment of the country's defense capability.
"How will we be able to help [Ukraine]? The matter will be solved through cooperation with all parties involved in foreign and security affairs policy," she said.
The Prime Minister added that Finland needs to discuss the possibility of transferring old fighter jets to Ukraine. She emphasized that this issue needs to be discussed now, as Ukraine needs heavier weapons to defend itself against Russia.
"It is clear that Ukraine needs even heavier equipment. And it's good that we were able to agree with partner countries about sending tanks, and yes, the next big issue is fighter jets and air defence," Marin told reporters.
In addition, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said that on Saturday he had discussed the issue of Hornet fighter jets with the Prime Minister. He noted that Finland focused on Ukraine's urgent needs and requests and responded to them with the 13th aid package for defense equipment. However, he also emphasized the importance of maintaining the country's own defense capabilities.
"Especially regarding the Hornets, the decisive factors are the requirements of our own defence. What happens to the Hornets after they are decommissioned is a different discussion" Niinisto said.
