EU halts discussion on confiscating frozen Russian assets, DW reports
EU leaders have stopped discussions on the possibility of confiscating frozen Russian assets in the EU, believing that the assets should remain immobilized
This was reported by DW, citing a text of the EU summit conclusions obtained.
"According to EU legislation, Russian assets must remain frozen until Russia ceases its aggressive war against Ukraine and compensates for the damages caused by this war," reads the adopted text.
It is also noted that the EU is ready to exert pressure on Russia, including by imposing additional sanctions.
DW writes that countries opposing the confiscation of over 200 billion euros of Russian assets justified their stance with EU legislation and the risk of a similar precedent for Europe's competitiveness in the financial services market. Additionally, their decision was influenced by the need to support Ukraine with interest from these funds and exert pressure on Russia in peace negotiations.
- On March 20, Ukraine received the second tranche of €1 billion from the European Union, secured by income from frozen Russian assets.
