Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed bill No. 13229, which introduces amendments to the Law "On Military Duty and Military Service," allowing citizens over the age of 60 to sign a contract for military service

This is stated on the bill’s page on the parliament’s website.

Under the new law, during martial law, men and women aged 60 and older can join the military on contract if a medical commission deems them fit for service. Signing a contract also requires written approval from the commander of the military unit. If the candidate is an officer, their appointment must be additionally approved by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or the relevant military authority.

New recruits will serve a two-month probation period. If they fail to meet service requirements during this time, the contract can be terminated early.

The law does not set an upper age limit for military contracts in this category. The initial contract lasts one year and can be extended. Once martial law ends, the contract will be automatically terminated. Other reasons for termination include failing the probation or being found unfit for service.

  • Zelenskyy also signed a law on mandatory officer training for medical and pharmaceutical students, passed by the Rada earlier this month.
