Berlin approves display of Russian flags on May 9, local police opposes

The Berlin Administrative Court has overturned the ban on displaying Russian flags during commemorative events on May 8 and 9, the police oppose it

The lifting of the ban on Russian flags and symbols applies only to events on May 8 and 9. 

The police has reportedly appealed the decision to the Supreme Administrative Court and expects a speedy decision.

  • May 8 and 9 mark the 78th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. To ensure a "dignified commemoration of the fallen soldiers of the former Soviet army," Berlin police banned Russian and Ukrainian flags and songs around Soviet memorials.

  • On May 6, an administrative court overturned the Berlin police's decision to ban Ukrainian flags at Soviet memorials in Treptow, Tiergarten, and Schönholzer Heide on May 8 and 9.
