Berlin approves display of Russian flags on May 9, local police opposes

The lifting of the ban on Russian flags and symbols applies only to events on May 8 and 9.
The police has reportedly appealed the decision to the Supreme Administrative Court and expects a speedy decision.

May 8 and 9 mark the 78th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. To ensure a "dignified commemoration of the fallen soldiers of the former Soviet army," Berlin police banned Russian and Ukrainian flags and songs around Soviet memorials.

On May 6, an administrative court overturned the Berlin police's decision to ban Ukrainian flags at Soviet memorials in Treptow, Tiergarten, and Schönholzer Heide on May 8 and 9.
