BBC reported the information.

Keir Starmer’s promise to increase defense spending comes after months of U.S. pressure urging Europe to take more responsibility for its own security. The pledge, which strengthens his position among European allies, is also seen as a key diplomatic gesture ahead of his upcoming visit to Washington, where he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, questioned Starmer during his address in the Commons on whether he would convene European leaders to begin the seizure of Russian assets, ensuring continued support for Ukraine regardless of U.S. actions. He also asked if the Prime Minister would try to persuade Trump to adopt the same stance and make Russia "pay." If those efforts fail, Davey suggested that the Prime Minister should make it clear that, if necessary, the UK will stand with Ukraine and its European allies, not with Putin and Trump.

In response, Starmer agreed that the UK needs to take a leading role in Europe, but emphasized that this should be done in close cooperation with the U.S., as lasting peace and security guarantees are paramount. He also noted that the £3 billion in interest from seized Russian assets has already been committed to Ukraine.

The promise to increase defense spending provides Starmer with diplomatic leverage as he heads to Washington. His goal may be to use this commitment to persuade Trump to continue U.S. support for Ukraine and secure American involvement in post-war security guarantees. This move will also earn Starmer credit among European allies, potentially encouraging them to follow suit.
