Spain provides Kyiv with record military aid package, signs security agreement with Ukraine

On May 27, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Spain, where he signed a bilateral security agreement with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. Madrid also announced a record €6 billion in military aid to Kyiv

The press conference was broadcast on Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Facebook page.

"We have just signed a political agreement that is very important. It is a treaty for the future, and it is an example of our determination to provide Ukraine with all the tools to ensure Ukraine's stability," Sanchez said, adding that Spain is the tenth country to sign a security agreement with Kyiv.

Spain's aid package for Ukraine

At the same time, Madrid is providing Kyiv with €1bn in aid for this year. Spain is also allocating €5 billion for Ukraine until 2027.

"For this year, we have recorded €1 billion in military aid, and for the period up to 2027, €5 billion for Ukraine from Spain through the European Peace Fund," Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy's visit to Spain

Today, the President of Ukraine announced on social media that he is visiting Spain to sign a bilateral security agreement and hold talks with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

It is noted that upon arrival in Spain, the Ukrainian delegation was personally met by Spanish King Felipe VI.

According to the president, he will discuss with the Spanish Prime Minister the continuation of defence cooperation, the preparation of a new military assistance package and training of the Ukrainian military.

"We have two summits ahead: The Peace Summit and the European Council Summit. We will coordinate our steps to ensure that each of them yields concrete results," Zelenskyy added. 

The Ukrainian leader will also be received by King Felipe VI and meet with the heads of the chambers and factions of the Spanish parliament.

As previously reported, a new arms package worth 1.13 billion euros will be announced during the meeting with Zelensky, under which Spain plans to send Patriot missiles and Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

Spain will provide Ukraine with a dozen critical Patriot anti-aircraft missiles, as well as 19 used German-made Leopard 2A4 tanks and other Spanish-made weapons, including anti-drone weapons and ammunition.

  • On May 20, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles said that a batch of Leopard tanks and ammunition would be delivered to Ukraine.
