Latvia cautious on troops for Ukraine, awaits clarity on peace agreement
The issue of Latvian soldiers’ participation in ensuring peace in Ukraine will only be discussed after defining security guarantees and the role of European countries
This was stated by Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, Delfi reports.
“If there is a peace treaty or peace agreement with security guarantees, then the potential presence of European countries and NATO member states in guaranteeing this agreement will also be discussed. Of course, first of all, it is necessary to conclude the peace treaty and understand its main elements — what the security guarantees will be and what the role of European countries will be. And from this, our role in this process will essentially follow,” the politician said.
At the same time, Rinkēvičs emphasized that the decision to send soldiers to Ukraine will be made by the Saeima.
“If we are talking about the possible deployment of our soldiers to Ukraine as part of guaranteeing this peace agreement and implementing security guarantees, then first of all, in Latvia this decision is made by the Saeima, after discussions in the Cabinet of Ministers and the National Security Council. But in order to talk about all this, it is necessary to clearly know all the details. At the moment, there are none. As far as I know, representatives of the armed forces of the member states of the Coalition of the Willing are working on this. But there is still no decision. When there is more clarity, discussions will take place,” he added.
