Canada announces $1.5 billion military aid package to Ukraine, new sanctions against Russia
Canada has announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth 2 billion Canadian dollars (about 1.5 billion U.S. dollars), as well as expanded sanctions against Russia
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated before a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G7 summit, as reported by Ukrinform, that Canada was providing additional military aid to Ukraine, including drones, helicopters, and various types of ammunition, totaling over 2 billion dollars in direct military assistance.
He also mentioned that Canada was significantly expanding sanctions against Russia, announcing sanctions against several individuals and more than 40 entities in Russia and other countries involved in evading sanctions. Restrictions were also being introduced against over 200 vessels of the so-called "shadow fleet."
Furthermore, Carney reported that Ukraine would be provided with a loan of 2 billion dollars, with the interest to be covered using frozen Russian assets.
He emphasized that this was Canada’s contribution and that they would work with European and other partners to encourage their participation, stressing the importance of maintaining firm support until Ukrainians achieve a just peace.
