37 armed clashes on Ukrainian frontline, Russian subversive reconnaissance groups operate on state border, General Staff reports 

The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces of Ukraine shared the information in a morning report on May 22.

Russian troops attack in Kupyansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Marinka directions. 

Over the last day, 37 combat engagements took place in the above-mentioned frontline areas. 

There are fighting around Bakhmut and Marinka.

Russians have reduced the training period for soldiers from among the convicts to 10 days

Against the backdrop of significant losses in manpower, the Russian military leadership has decided to reduce the training period for convicted soldiers whose base camp is deployed in Starobilsk district of Luhansk region to 10 days. 

Earlier, about 1,000 new recruits were brought to the camp from prisons in Russia. The training was planned to last for 4 weeks.

Russia launches  6 missile and 52 air strikes on Ukraine 

On May 22, the Russian occupying forces launched a massive missile and air strike, the information will be published after clarification.

Over the past day, Russian troops launched 6 missile, 52 air strikes, and 65 MLRS attacks. Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged. 

To strike the Ukrainian cities of Lyman, Sloviansk and Kostyantynivka, they again used S-300 air defense systems, which are not high-precision weapons.

"This once again emphasizes the terror tactics of the Russian Federation," the General Staff comments.

The threat of missile and air strikes throughout Ukraine remains very high.

Situation by directions

On the northern border with Belarus, the situation remains unchanged.

On the northeastern border with Russia, Russian troops maintain a military presence in the areas bordering Ukraine, and hostile sabotage and reconnaissance groups are operating in some parts of the state border. 

Over the past day, they fired mortars and artillery at 18 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions.

In the Kupyansk direction, Russian forces are trying to improve their tactical situation.

During the day, they launched unsuccessful attacks near Masiutivka and shelled 11 settlements in the Kharkiv region and 1 settlement in the Luhansk region.

In the Lyman direction, Russians launched assaults in the direction of Ivano-Daryivka over the past day, but were unsuccessful.

They also launched air strikes near Nevske, shelled 3 settlements in the Luhansk region and 3 more in the Donetsk region.

In the Bakhmut direction, Russian forces are on the offensive. Fighting for the city of Bakhmut continues. 

Over the past day, they tried unsuccessfully to regain lost ground south of Ivanivske. They also attacked in the direction of Hryhorivka, but were unsuccessful. 

Russian troops launched air strikes near Bakhmut and Ivanivske and shelled 8 settlements in the Donetsk region.

In the Avdiivka direction, Russian troops launched unsuccessful offensives in the direction of Avdiivka and Pervomayske. 

During the day, they launched an air strike near Avdiivka. Eight settlements in the Donetsk region came under shelling.

In the Marinka direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces units repel Russian attacks near Marinka.

Russian troops launched air strikes near the town and Novomykhailivka. At the same time, 3 settlements in the Donetsk region came under Russian fire.

In the Shakhtarsk direction, Russian forces did not launch any assaults. 

Instead, they struck with aircraft near 5 settlements and shelled 2 settlements with artillery.

In Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, Russian troops are on the defensive. They destroy the infrastructure of settlements near the contact line.

Over the past day, they launched air strikes on 2 settlements in the Zaporizhzhia region and 2 more in the Kherson region, shelled 5 settlements in the Donetsk region, 8 in the Zaporizhzhya region and 7 more in the Kherson region.

Ukrainian Armed Forces hit 2 control points, 3 artillery units at firing positions and 2 Russian ammunition depots

Over the past day, the aviation of the Ukrainian Defense Forces launched 14 strikes on concentrations of Russian personnel and military equipment, as well as 7 strikes on anti-aircraft missile systems.

Ukrainian missile and artillery units struck 5 concentrations of Russian personnel, 2 ammunition depots, 3 artillery units at firing positions, 2 command posts, an electronic warfare station, an anti-aircraft missile system and another important target.

In addition, 3 Russian reconnaissance UAVs of various types were destroyed, as well as 5 strike UAVs.

• Earlier, the Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russians restricted the access of civilians to mobile communications in the settlements of the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson region.
