17,000 Ukrainian refugees settle in Croatia, 85% are women and children

About 17,000 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in Croatia. 85% of them are women and children. Croatian Interior Minister Davor Bozhynovich shared these updated figures on May 11.

Total Croatia News covers the story of Ukrainian refugees in the country.

Croatia set up a clear and transparent system for refugees: a temporary protection mechanism provides refugees all their rights, including a work permit.

"I'm glad to say that the whole process was rolled out without problems or difficulties. I believe that Ukrainians are pleased and grateful for the treatment that they are given in Croatia," he added.

Bozhynovich also spoke about the difference between Ukrainian refugees and migrants arriving from Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

"Despite the war, all Ukrainian refugees came to Croatia through border checkpoints with personal documents, unlike migrants who almost never come at the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and the lack of personal documents makes a very important difference," he said.
