Zelenskyy meets with PMs of Spain, Italy to discuss armor supply
On October 5, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived at the European Political Community Summit in Granada. There he met with the Prime Ministers of Spain and Italy
He announced his meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Telegram.
The Ukrainian leader briefed Meloni on the course of the counteroffensive and the main defense needs.
"We discussed the next package of military assistance from Italy, in particular, ways to strengthen our air defense," he wrote.
The politicians also discussed the upcoming Italian presidency of the G7 and the country's participation in the restoration of Odesa.
Earlier, Zelenskyy announced a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The leaders talked about the unity of Europe for the sake of security and stability, as well as about the defense and strengthening of the Ukrainian military.
Zelensky later wrote that they discussed a new defense support package that includes additional air defense, artillery, and anti-drone systems. As well as the provision of energy equipment before the winter period and the operation and protection of the grain corridor.
"We are preparing to start negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU under the Spanish presidency. Thank you for supporting our aspirations," Zelensky added.
The president also claimed that during his visit to the United States, he heard assurances of full support for Ukraine from President Joe Biden, European Pravda reports.
When asked by journalists whether Zelenskyy was concerned about the news from the US about helping Ukraine, he said that "in Ukraine, we stopped worrying in the first days of the full-scale invasion. I think it's too late for us to worry."
"I was in Washington, I met with President Biden, I heard about the 100 percent support of the White House, and I also (heard) about the bipartisan support in Congress," Zelenskyy said.
He also pointed out that it is a "difficult election period" in the United States, so "different voices" can be heard, and some voices are "very strange."
The Ukrainian president confirmed his trip on Telegram.
"We will work in joint formats and have important bilateral meetings. The key for us, especially before winter, is to strengthen air defense, and we already have the basis for new agreements with partners. We are preparing to confirm and implement them," Zelenskyy wrote.
He added that the government is working to strengthen the existing security architecture in Europe, including the regional one.
"Ukraine has significant proposals. Special attention should be paid to the Black Sea region and joint work for global food security and protection of freedom of navigation," the president summarized.
For reference. The European Political Community was established on May 9, 2022, on the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron during his then-French presidency of the EU.
It is a platform for political and strategic discussions on the future of Europe. Granada will host the third meeting in this format to discuss the most critical issues of concern to Europeans across the continent. The previous two ENP summits were held in the Czech Republic and Moldova.
- Leaders of about 50 countries will gather on October 5-6 in the Spanish city of Granada for the third European Political Community (EPC) meeting.
