
Zelenskyy talks with Canadian PM to urge more pressure on Russia
On Saturday, May 17, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Rome, where he had arrived to attend the inauguration of the new Pope

Key topics of discussion included peace negotiations with Russia in Turkey, the need to increase pressure on the Russian Federation to end the war, and the necessity of a prisoner exchange.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of international pressure on Russia.
"We must put pressure on Russia, on Putin, to truly reach peace as soon as possible. Sanctions are very important. That’s why we need to increase the pressure. More pressure, more sanctions. We are grateful for your sanctions packages, for the support of European and American sanctions," he stressed.
In addition, the parties agreed to discuss Canada’s upcoming G7 presidency and the possibility of using it to unite the world’s largest economies around the idea of increasing pressure on Russia.
“We have many important issues to discuss, the situation is very fluid, and one final note: I look forward to welcoming the President to Canada in less than a month for the G7 summit,” Mark Carney told Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy also informed the Canadian Prime Minister about Ukraine’s cooperation with partner countries within the coalition of the willing and “what is needed to bring lasting peace closer.”
“I’m glad that our efforts in defense, countering Russian aggression, the economy, and international affairs in general are well coordinated,” the President noted.
Zelenskyy also told Carney about Russian missile and drone strikes on civilians and emphasized that “Ukraine needs strengthened air defense to protect lives.”
