Zelenskyy meets Norwegian Defense Minister Sandvik on first visit to Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Onshus Sandvik. This was Sandvik’s first visit to Ukraine since he took office in February
This was reported on the official website of the President of Ukraine.
During the meeting, Zelenskyy thanked the Norwegian government for its substantial military support to Ukraine, which has been increased to $7 billion this year. Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine expects this level of assistance to continue into next year.
The key topic of discussion was how to use these funds most effectively to support Ukrainians in their fight against Russian aggression.
"We spoke, of course, with the Prime Minister about increasing the capacity of our domestic production of long-range weapons. I am pleased to note that he supported this idea and proposed discussing it with you in more detail," the Head of State said.
The parties also discussed investments in the production of Ukrainian weapons, including drones and long-range missiles, as well as scaling up joint defense production.
Other important topics included strengthening air defense and bolstering combat aviation. The President thanked Norway for providing F-16 fighter jets. He also stressed the importance of supplying NASAMS systems and missiles for them to protect civilian infrastructure from Russian terror.
Additionally, Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Norway for its energy support during the winter and for allocating funds for the purchase of imported gas.
Norway’s Minister of Defense confirmed continued support for Ukraine and emphasized the importance of developing the defense capabilities of both nations.
- In early June, Ukraine's Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov met with his Norwegian counterpart Tore Onshus Sandvik in Brussels, after which it was announced that Oslo would allocate $7 billion in aid to Ukraine in 2025.
