Agreed "formulation" on Ukraine

The BRICS nations have agreed on a "formulation" regarding Ukraine. This "wording" will be included in the summit's final declaration, according to an announcement by Yury Ushakov, an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The wording has already been agreed upon and raised no objections. It reflects a general position and approach that has been approved for the declaration,” Ushakov stated, as reported by TASS.

Putin and Xi Jinping's talks

According to Russia's state news agency RIA-Novosti, Putin and Xi Jinping "exchanged views" on Ukraine and the "international situation" during their meeting in Kazan.

Putin's spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, called the discussion "constructive and frank."

Putin meets Modi

Interfax and RIA-Novosti reported that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the BRICS summit in Kazan, where he met with Vladimir Putin.

After embracing the Russian leader, Modi voiced his support for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine war.

“Regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine: we are in constant contact. As I’ve said before, we believe the issues should be resolved through peaceful means, and we fully support achieving peace and stability as soon as possible,” Modi said during his meeting with Putin.

He added that India "prioritizes humanity in all its efforts" and is ready to offer any possible assistance in the future.

Ukraine's response to Guterres’ visit

Ukrainian diplomats criticized Guterres for attending the BRICS summit.

The UN Secretary General declined Ukraine's invitation to the first Global Peace Summit in Switzerland. He did, however, accept the invitation to Kazan from war criminal Putin. This is a wrong choice that does not advance the cause of peace. It only damages the UN's reputation,” the Ukrainian MFA said in a statement on X.

  • On August 23, Modi visited Ukraine's capital, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. One of the main topics of their discussion was the upcoming Peace Summit.
  • Later, on August 27, Putin and Modi spoke by phone.
