World leaders send Independence Day greetings to Ukraine

World leaders have congratulated Ukraine on Independence Day, including the presidents of Lithuania, Switzerland, Turkey, Moldova, and Finland; the Prime Minister of Sweden; the King of Great Britain; China’s leader; Pope Leo XIV; and the President of the European Commission

The leaders wrote about this on their pages on the social media platform X.  President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy also published letters with congratulations.

Greetings from the U.S.

U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Ukraine on its main state holiday, expressing support for its people and calling for a peaceful end to the war. Zelenskyy posted his letter on his page on X.

"Dear Mr. President: On behalf of the American people, I extend my congratulations and warmest wishes to you and the courageous people of Ukraine as you celebrate 34 years of independence," Trump said in his message.

He stressed that "the people of Ukraine have an unbreakable spirit, and your country’s courage inspires many."

"As you mark this important day, know the United States respects your fight, honors your sacrifices, and believes in your future as an independent nation. Now is the moment to bring an end to the senseless killing. The United States supports a negotiated settlement that leads to a durable, lasting peace that ends the bloodshed and safeguards Ukraine’s sovereignty and dignity. God bless Ukraine," the American leader concluded.

Zelenskyy thanked Trump for the greetings, noting that Ukrainians believe that "by working together, we can put an end to this war and achieve real peace for Ukraine."

Greetings from Turkey

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also sent greetings, stressing the importance of the strategic partnership between the two countries for regional and global stability.

"Dear President, My Dear Friend, On behalf of my Nation and myself, I extend my most heartfelt congratulations to Your Excellency and to the friendly people of Ukraine on the occasion of Ukraine's Independence Day," Erdogan said.

The Turkish leader highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation.

"Our comprehensive cooperation, which contributes to the prosperity of our countries and peoples, continues to grow stronger with each passing year, gaining a multidimensional and multilayered character. I am convinced that the Türkiye-Ukraine strategic partnership is of the utmost importance for trust and stability both at the regional and global levels," he stressed.

The Ukrainian head of state thanked the Turkish leader "for his wise and cordial words on the eve of Ukraine's Independence Day."

"Dear President, I completely agree with you that the Turkish-Ukrainian strategic partnership is crucial for our nations and also for regional and global stability. We are grateful for your personal efforts to achieve peace and look forward to developing our cooperation in all areas," Zelenskyy said.

Greetings from China

Zelenskyy also published congratulations on Ukraine's Independence Day from Chinese leader Xi Jinping. In his letter, Xi expressed sincere wishes to the Ukrainian people and reaffirmed the importance of friendly relations between the two countries.

He also confirmed China's readiness to work on further developing bilateral relations "steady and long-term development and bring greater benefits to the peoples of both countries."

"I appreciate congratulations by Chairman Xi Jinping on the occasion of Ukraine’s Independence Day and underscore our interest in developing long-term bilateral dialogue with mutual respect and for the sake of peace, stability, and prosperity," the President of Ukraine said in response.

Greetings from the Netherlands

King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands sent greetings to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Independence Day. In his letter, he wished the Ukrainian people well and praised their courage and resilience.

"I honor the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people and pay tribute to their perseverance and hope, which inspire many people around the world. Please be assured that the Netherlands will be with you every step of the way. For as long as it takes," he said.

In response, Zelenskyy thanked the King of the Netherlands "for his warm wishes on Ukraine’s Independence Day."

"We deeply appreciate the Royal Family’s attention to the Ukrainian people, as well as all of the support we have received from the Netherlands and the entire Dutch people. Together, we are defending our shared values of freedom, independence, and justice," the president said.

Greetings from Great Britain

King Charles III of Great Britain also congratulated Ukrainians on the holiday.

"Dear Mr. President! My wife and I sincerely congratulate you and the people of Ukraine on the occasion of Independence Day. I keep feeling the greatest and deepest admiration for the unbreakable courage and spirit of the Ukrainian people. I remain hopeful that our countries will be able to further work closely together to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine," reads the king's letter, published on the Ukrainian president's page.

Zelenskyy thanked King Charles III for his words.

"His Majesty’s kind words are a true inspiration for our people during the difficult time of war. We appreciate the United Kingdom’s leadership in supporting Ukraine and our just cause: to defend freedom from tyranny and ensure a lasting peace in Ukraine and throughout Europe," he said.

Greetings from Switzerland

Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter also sent congratulations to President Zelenskyy on Independence Day. She praised the resilience and spirit of Ukrainians during the war.

"On behalf of the Swiss Federal Council and the Swiss people, it gives me great pleasure to extend my warm congratulations to you and your fellow citizens on the occasion of this year's Independence Day of Ukraine," she said.

She stressed that Switzerland strongly condemns Russia's war against Ukraine and is ready to support with humanitarian aid, mine clearance, financial assistance, and temporary shelter for victims. She also expressed hope for stronger cooperation between the two countries.

Zelenskyy thanked Switzerland in return.

"Ukraine values Switzerland's support. We look forward to expanding our partnership in all areas, including political dialogue, economic cooperation, and joint efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous Europe," he wrote.

Greetings from Lithuania

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda congratulated Ukrainians with a video message posted on X.

"Dear President Zelenskyy, dear people of Ukraine, Happy Independence Day!" he wrote under the video.

Zelenskyy responded with thanks to Lithuania for its support.

Greetings from the President of the European Commission

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also congratulated Ukraine.

"A free, democratic and independent Ukraine. That's what you are fighting for. That's what our efforts are all about. We are with you, for as long as it takes. Because a free Ukraine is a free Europe. Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!" she wrote on X.

Congratulations from Moldova

Moldovan President Maia Sandu congratulated Ukraine, highlighting solidarity in its fight for freedom and sovereignty.

"Today, more than ever, Moldova stands with Ukraine. Your courage safeguards our freedom too. Moldova will spare no effort to remain a strong and reliable neighbour — defending sovereignty, advancing on the European path, and working for peace. Slava Ukraini!" she said.

Congratulations from Finland

Finnish President Alexander Stubb also sent greetings, posting a video message on X.

"Happy Independence Day, Ukraine. Slava Ukraini," Stubb wrote under the video.
