War is easy to start, hard to end
And in the coming weeks, we will see this in the Middle East
Ending or at least stopping hostilities usually consists of two parts. The first is a political decision to cease fighting; the second is a series of technical steps to implement that decision.
One such step is a monitoring and control system to ensure compliance with the ceasefire. Without it, all statements about a “truce” remain merely declarative. Then, as has happened many times before, we will see a flood of mutual accusations of violations. Given the real state of relations between Iran and Israel, there is no shortage of those willing to commit such violations.
Until such a system is established, talking about a real end to the conflict is premature. And Trump’s statement about the “end of the war” looks, at best, like an attempt to pass off a pause as a resolution; at worst, a political manipulation.
All we can hope for now is that Israel destroyed a critical part of the infrastructure for producing “kamikaze” drones. It’s just a pity this wasn’t done three years ago.
