US rejects Russian attempts to tie Ukraine to Moscow terrorist attack

On Sunday, March 24, the U.S. National Security Council (NSC) firmly dismissed Russia's allegations of Ukrainian involvement in the terrorist attack on the Crocus City Hall mall near Moscow

NBC News reported on the development.

NSC spokesperson Adrienne Watson stated unequivocally that ISIS bears sole responsibility for this attack.

"There was no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever," she emphasized.

Watson reiterated that the US had previously warned Russia about the ISIS threat of a terrorist attack.

It's worth noting that the day before, the US Security Council stated that the warning was issued “in accordance with its longstanding ‘duty to warn’ policy.”

According to US officials speaking to NBC News, intelligence agencies have been gathering information for months suggesting that ISIS might carry out a mass-casualty attack in Russia.

Terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall: Details

During a concert at the Crocus City Hall shopping center near Moscow on Friday, March 22, individuals in camouflage attire opened fire, resulting in over 130 confirmed deaths and numerous injuries. The FSB claims to have apprehended the suspects.

The Main Directorate of Intelligence asserts that the shooting at Moscow's Crocus shopping center was a deliberate provocation orchestrated by Putin's regime. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the world to firmly reject false accusations from Russia regarding Ukraine's alleged involvement. The White House also dismissed Ukraine's involvement.

Commander of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army, Dmytro Yarosh, denied any involvement of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the shooting at the Crocus shopping center in Moscow.

On March 23, Putin addressed the terrorist attack, alleging that Ukraine was "creating an opportunity" for terrorists responsible for the attack in the Moscow suburbs.

Andrii Yusov, a Main Directorate of Intelligence representative, denounced Putin's statement as entirely false and absurd.

Following the terrorist attack, Vladimir Vasiliev, head of the "United Russia" faction, announced that the State Duma would thoroughly consider the issue of reinstating the death penalty.

On the evening of March 23, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the terrorist attack near Moscow for the first time, stating that Putin and others are attempting to shift the blame onto someone else.

Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believe that the Islamic State terrorist group may be involved in the terrorist attack.
