U.S. National Security Adviser Sullivan arrives in China to discuss Ukraine

According to the report, this marks the first visit to China by a U.S. president's national security adviser since 2016. Sullivan is expected to meet with the country’s top diplomat, Wang Yi.
Among the topics likely to be addressed by the American official are China’s ongoing support for Russian forces in Ukraine and Washington’s stance on the South China Sea and Taiwan.
Chinese officials, representing President Xi Jinping, are set to raise concerns about Taiwan and discuss U.S. actions against Beijing, including tariffs, export controls, and sanctions, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
- In July 2024, the European Union imposed tariffs of up to 38.1% on imports of Chinese electric vehicles.
- In May of the same year, the United States announced an $18 billion increase in tariffs on certain Chinese imports, including electric vehicles and semiconductors.
- Starting October 1, Canada will implement a 100% tariff on Chinese electric cars, including Tesla, and will also impose a 25% duty on steel and aluminum imports from China.
