U.S. and Russia in talks on Arctic resource development – media
The U.S. and Russia are discussing cooperation on Arctic resource development and trade routes, as both have shared interests in the region
Bloomberg reported the information, citing its own sources.
According to sources, the talks covered resource exploration and trade routes, with potential cooperation in energy development also on the table. These discussions took place alongside negotiations between Trump and Putin, where both sides signaled openness to working together.
In recent years, the Arctic has drawn increased attention as melting ice from climate change is opening new shipping routes and access to untapped energy and mineral reserves.
U.S. officials reportedly see Arctic cooperation with Russia as a way to drive a wedge between Moscow and Beijing. However, sources suggest this is unlikely, given Russia and China’s growing ties in recent years.
U.S. and Russian officials declined to comment.
Last year, the Pentagon released a new Arctic strategy warning of risks from a Russia-China alliance in the region. Meanwhile, China has been expanding its Arctic presence, calling itself a “sub-Arctic state” since 2018 and investing in fishing, energy, and transport projects. The possibility of new shipping routes is central to Beijing’s plan for a Polar Silk Road linking East Asia, Western Europe, and North America.
- Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said he was in talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin about “ending the war, as well as major economic development agreements between the U.S. and Russia.”
