Ukraine’s relations with Republicans likely to worsen, says international affairs expert
Stanislav Zhelikhovskyi, PhD in Political Science and international affairs expert, commented on U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump's recent remarks, in which he criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's U.S. visit
He shared his opinions with Espreso TV.
"Donald Trump is ramping up his election campaign, and I want to stress that it has reached its peak. These are critical days when decisions are being made about how Americans will vote in November. In my view, this is still very much tied to domestic political dynamics. Trump delivered this speech in North Carolina, a key battleground state where he and Kamala Harris are vying for support. It's clear this was an effort to attract as many sympathizers as possible. The same goes for Pennsylvania, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited an ammunition plant. Pennsylvania is another crucial state, and the outcome of the entire campaign could hinge on these battlegrounds," said Zhelikhovskyi.
According to Dr. Zhelikhovskyi, Ukraine is likely to face challenging relations with the Republican Party until the conclusion of the U.S. elections.
“And given that Kamala Harris's support is growing, while Trump's is decreasing, meaning that there is a wider gap between them, it is important for the Trump campaign and the entire Republican Party to change the situation in their favor. And Ukraine has thus found itself in the epicenter of this struggle, and obviously this will have consequences. It will have consequences for our cooperation with the Republican Party at this stage. That is, until the elections are held, I assume that there will be many more such escalations, and only after the election process, regardless of who wins, will a new page of relations between Ukraine and the Republican Party be built,” he said.
