Slovakia may follow Germany in holding snap elections
Growing tensions within Slovakia's ruling coalition could lead to early elections, with critical challenges expected in the coming months and by late 2025

Slovakia is facing rising political tensions that could lead to early elections, with coalition infighting threatening Prime Minister Robert Fico's government. The coalition's stability has been undermined by intensifying conflicts among Fico's allies.
One key development is the alliance of Ivan Korčok, a recent presidential candidate with pro-European and pro-Ukraine stances, with the Progressive Slovakia party. Korčok, who won the first round of the last presidential election, has joined Progressive Slovakia party to strengthen the opposition to Fico’s party, which recent polls show is losing ground. Korčok is set to focus on foreign policy within the party, including Slovak relations with Ukraine.
Analysts predict that Fico’s government could face two critical periods that may trigger early elections. The first crisis is expected within the next one to three months, as Fico grapples with demands from a faction within the pro-Moscow Slovak National Party (SNS). This faction, led by Peter Gulyak, has been pressing Fico to remove a cabinet seat from SNS leader Andrej Danko and assign it to their faction. Fico’s team has reportedly held talks with SNS leadership but avoided formal discussions with Gulyak's group to prevent further fracturing of the coalition. If unresolved, this dispute could escalate within months, potentially collapsing Fico’s parliamentary majority.
The second major test is anticipated in November 2025. By then, Slovakia’s government must address its significant national debt or face financial penalties. To pass the 2025 budget, Fico would likely need to call for a confidence vote, which may challenge his already narrow majority.
In sum, Slovakia may face early elections within the coming months or next year if Fico’s coalition continues to face these mounting obstacles.
