Stubb made these comments during an interview with Reuters.
The UN Security Council, which consists of 5 permanent and 10 rotating members, is tasked with maintaining global peace. However, political rivalries have brought the body to a standstill on key issues like Ukraine and Gaza.
Stubb plans to propose expanding the number of permanent members from 5 to 10, suggesting additional representation for Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
No country should hold veto power in the UN Security Council, he said.
Stubb added that any member state involved in an illegal war, like Russia’s current war in Ukraine, should be expelled from the council.
- The U.S. has also unveiled proposals for reforming the UN Security Council, including adding two permanent seats for African nations.
