Politico reported the information.
The outlet highlighted that this new date is a middle ground between center-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz and conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz.
Scholz is expected to face a vote of confidence by Christmas, paving the way for new elections in February. Last week, after months of intense disagreements over budget policies and economic stimulus, his three-party coalition collapsed.
Originally, the chancellor aimed to hold the confidence vote on January 15, which would have enabled elections by late March. However, following pressure from other party leaders, including the CDU’s Friedrich Merz, Scholz moved the timeline forward, resulting in the new February date.
- German chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz has stated that, if elected, he would issue an ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the war; if Putin refused, Merz would supply Ukraine with Taurus missiles.
